History
St. Michael’s Catholic Church was built in 1870 on a high ridge of land above the Yellowstone River. The land for the church and parking area was given by Christopher and Hannah Hartung, Patrick Thornton, and Jim Coffey. On the morning of January 29, 1945, the day for the funeral mass of Louis Gratz, the church burned. The new church was soon underway and was dedicated on July 14, 1948. The church has been a mission of Dodgeville, Blanchardville and now Hollandale. The centennial celebration was held in 1970 and the church remodeled in 1983. It has now merged into St. Francis of Assisi Parish, but is no longer an active church.
