Immaculate Conception Church of Barneveld, or St. Mary's, was established as a mission in 1887 by Rev. J.W. Vahey of St. Bridget's in Ridgeway. These two communities have always been connected from the beginning. On June 8. 1984, St. Mary's original church in Barneveld was completely destroyed, along with most buildings in the village, by a devastating category 5 tornado. The people ofBarneveld rallied together to rebuild their church, even proving to the diocese that the small rural congregation was capable of reviving itself for the future. Groundbreaking for the new church took place on October 22, 1984. Two days before Christmas, 2004, a fire broke out in the sanctuary of the present church, causing significant damage. Once again, the community rallied together to prove, even to the diocese, that there was strength and unity in the Catholic faithful of this town. Not only was the church restored, but the congregation used the opportunity to extend the building, adding more room for the sacristy along with three faith formation classrooms and an office downstairs. In 2013, St. Bridget in Ridgeway and Immaculate Conception in Barneveld officially merged into one congregation called St. Bernadette Parish. Now as Barneveld continues to grows, Barneveld continues to be an attractive place to worship for young families and all in St. Francis of Assisi Parish.
